Bike Calgary is deeply saddened by the tragic loss of a cyclist at the intersection of 26th Avenue and 32nd Street SW. This incident is a stark reminder of the urgent need for enhanced cycling safety in our city.

The involvement of a dump truck in this fatal crash highlights the significant risks that cyclists encounter every day, especially at intersections with large vehicles. We firmly believe that the city must take immediate action to improve cycling infrastructure. This includes the creation of more protected bike lanes, enhanced signage and signaling, and the implementation of traffic calming measures that prioritize the safety of vulnerable road users like cyclists and pedestrians. Research indicates that such improvements can reduce cyclist fatalities by as much as 50% (Journal of Safety Research, 2019), and it is imperative that we act on this knowledge without delay.

We demand that the City of Calgary conducts a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding this tragic event, focusing on the potential factors such as blind spots and turning procedures that may have contributed to the accident. This investigation should inform a broader conversation about the necessary steps to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.

Bike Calgary is committed to advocating for the changes that will make our streets safer for cyclists. We call upon city officials to work with us in a collaborative and proactive manner to expedite the implementation of these lifesaving measures. We cannot allow paint alone to serve as our sole defense against tragedies like this; we need substantial, physical barriers and comprehensive safety strategies.

We stand with the cycling community in mourning this devastating loss and reaffirm our dedication to creating a city where cycling is a safe and enjoyable experience for all. Let us come together to ensure that no more lives are claimed by preventable crashes. We owe it to the victims, their loved ones, and everyone who cherishes the freedom and health benefits that cycling provides.

In solidarity and sorrow,
The Bike Calgary Team
