On Friday afternoon, Their Honours attended a commemorative ceremony at the Baetha Statues in Botwood, alongside sculptor Morgan MacDonald, Indigenous leaders, and elected officials. Unveiled in 2024, these bronze statues honor an Indigenous woman named Demasduit, her husband Nonosabasut, and their child, all gazing over the waterways once traversed by the Beothuk people. In her speech, Her Honour remarked that the humanity and spirit captured in these magnificent statues serve as a powerful testament to the story of the Beothuk. Tragically, Demasduit passed away aboard the HMS Grasshopper before she could be reunited with her family. The term "Baetha" means "Going Home.
