In a major development at the ongoing Nato summit, member countries have agreed to increase their defense and security spending to 5% of their GDP by 2035. This new target is more comprehensive than the current goal of 2% of GDP for core defense spending, which not all member states are expected to achieve until 2024.

The Hague Declaration also reaffirms the alliance's commitment to collective defense, emphasizing the importance of Article 5 of the Washington Treaty, which states that an attack on one member is an attack on all. This comes after former US President Donald Trump's comments questioning the definition of Article 5, which guarantees collective defense among Nato members. UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer also announced that the country will provide additional defense missiles to Ukraine and commit to purchasing 12 new F-35A fighter jets to bolster its nuclear deterrent capability.
The summit's focus on increased defense spending and reassurance of collective defense reflects the heightened tensions with Russia following its invasion of Ukraine and the evolving global security landscape.
