Police are investigating a "family harm incident" that resulted in a fatality in Pātea on Saturday morning.

Police were called to the Dorset Street address at 8.55 a.m., where they discovered a man with significant injuries.

"Despite the efforts of emergency services, he was unable to be revived and died at the scene," Detective Senior Sergeant Debra Gower said.

According to her, a 34-year-old male was apprehended at the site, and a homicide investigation has begun.

"Cordons are in place, and a scene examination will be conducted in the coming days. We do not feel there is an ongoing risk to the public.

According to Gower, locals could expect a heightened police presence in the South Taranaki town as the inquiry progresses.
