Lance Corporal Cooper fought at Gallipoli and Beaumont Hamel during World War I, where he sustained injuries. Afterward, he became a machine gun instructor in Scotland, where he married a Scottish woman before returning to Newfoundland.

Holding regiment number 98, Lance Corporal Cooper was among the First Five Hundred to deploy overseas at the beginning of the war, embarking on the Florizel like many others.

During today's gathering, Their Honours engaged with Lance Corporal Cooper's Scottish relatives and friends, as well as Major (Ret'd) Michael Pretty, who leads the Trail of the Caribou research group. It was an occasion for Their Honours to learn about James Cooper's story and reflect on his life and service.
