The South African government is planning to launch an AI-driven digital visa system, known as the Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA), in September 2025 for tourists from countries that currently require a visa for short-term visits (under 90 days).

This system is aimed at simplifying the visa application process, reducing airport delays, and enhancing fraud prevention. The Home Affairs Minister, Leon Schreiber, has demonstrated a live smartphone-ready version of the ETA, which is expected to replace the existing e-Visa system for the same set of countries.

The ETA will be applicable to tourists from countries such as India, China, South America, Asia, Africa, and Eastern Europe. While the official list of eligible countries is yet to be confirmed, it is likely to include nations that are currently part of the e-Visa system, such as India, China, Vietnam, Philippines, Russia, Ukraine, and others.

The new system promises instant visa approvals via smartphones, eliminating the need for paperwork and in-person appointments. The AI-based platform is expected to enhance the overall experience for travelers by providing a more efficient and secure process.

As the launch date approaches, travelers from visa-required countries should stay informed about the following:

1. Interaction between ETA and the current e-Visa system: It is essential to understand if the ETA will replace the e-Visa entirely or if there will be an integration between the two systems.
2. Changes to the application portal: The government may introduce a new portal for the ETA, and travelers need to be aware of the new platform to apply for their visas.
3. Final list of eligible countries: Keep an eye on the Department of Home Affairs' announcements to confirm whether your country is included in the list of countries that can use the ETA system.

The South African government's long-term vision is to extend the AI-based ETA system to cover all visa categories, including work, study, and residency permits, moving towards a fully digital immigration process to eliminate fraud and inefficiency.

Make sure to check for the latest updates from the Department of Home Affairs to avoid confusion and ensure a smooth travel experience when the new system goes live.
