Five bodies have been discovered by divers in the wreckage of a yacht that sank off the coast of Lampedusa, an Italian island near Sicily. The yacht was carrying migrants, mostly from sub-Saharan Africa, attempting the dangerous Mediterranean crossing to reach Europe.

The vessel, which was initially believed to have been carrying around 46 people, capsized and sank on August 20, 2024, amid rough seas. Italian authorities managed to rescue 39 survivors shortly after the incident, but several others remained missing, prompting a search operation.

Divers eventually located the sunken wreck at a depth of approximately 47 meters (154 feet) and found the five bodies trapped inside. The discovery of these bodies brings the total confirmed death toll from this tragic incident to seven, with more bodies potentially still unaccounted for.

The tragedy underscores the ongoing humanitarian crisis in the Mediterranean, where thousands of migrants risk their lives each year in overcrowded and unseaworthy boats, fleeing war, persecution, and poverty in search of safety and better opportunities in Europe. Italy, particularly the island of Lampedusa, has been at the forefront of this crisis, often struggling to manage the influx of arrivals.
