FIJI SUBMITS RATIFICATION INSTRUMENTS FOR HISTORIC HIGH SEAS TREATY AT THE UN OCEANS CONFERENCE

In a significant step for ocean conservation, Fiji has officially submitted its instruments of ratification for the Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdictions (BBNJ) agreement to the United Nations. Elinor Jane Britt Hammarskjöld, the Under-Secretary-General for Legal Affairs and UN Legal Counsel, received the documents, underscoring Fiji's strong commitment to protecting marine life in areas beyond national jurisdiction.

The ratification was executed by the Honorable Mosese Bulitavu, Minister for Environment and Climate Change, during the United Nations Ocean Conference held in Nice, France, on June 9, 2025. This action marks Fiji's formal support of the historic treaty designed to enhance international cooperation and governance to preserve the high seas.
