The Executive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Mr. Ola Olukoyede, has urged students in tertiary institutions to combat internet fraud with the same vigor they once used to tackle cultism. 20250528_083728.jpg
He suggested that the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) could play a pivotal role in this by initiating sensitization and re-orientation programs across campuses. He emphasized that students should focus on their education and explore legitimate means of earning money rather than engaging in cybercrime.

Olukoyede's call comes amidst concerns that cybercrime, particularly internet fraud, has become prevalent among young Nigerians, including a significant number of students. He lamented that 90% of those arrested for internet fraud are students and called on the new NANS leadership to support the EFCC's efforts by not providing cover for cybercriminals within their ranks.

The Acting Director of the EFCC's Ibadan Zonal Directorate, ACE I Hauwa Garba Ringim, received the Southwest Executive members of NANS and commended them for their willingness to collaborate. The NANS coordinator, Comrade Taiwo Owolewa, assured that the association would take active measures to combat cybercrime among students. He mentioned ongoing programs to sensitize students about the dangers of internet fraud and the importance of reporting perpetrators.

The EFCC and NANS are aiming to work together to reduce the incidence of cybercrime on campuses and promote a culture of honesty and integrity among the youth. The EFCC's approach underscores the need for a collective effort from all stakeholders, including students, to tackle the issue effectively.
