His tenure coincided with the federal election and the subsequent transition of the government. Carney has expressed his appreciation for Mendicino's efforts and noted that he will remain in his role to help launch the new government's mandate. Mendicino's departure has led to speculation that he may be preparing to run for Mayor of Toronto in 2026, a move that has been encouraged by residents and community leaders. His time in the government included managing significant issues like the invocation of the Emergencies Act during the Freedom Convoy protests and facing criticism over the handling of the transfer of serial killer Paul Bernardo to a medium-security prison. Mendicino was originally an MP for the Liberal Party, representing the riding of Eglinton-Lawrence from 2015 before stepping down from his parliamentary role in January. Beverly Nadiger
