The Supreme Court has blocked the immediate release of documents and testimony related to Elon Musk's Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), granting a temporary stay to the Trump administration in a case brought by the Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW).

CREW had been seeking information about DOGE's role in the mass firings and significant cuts to federal agencies that occurred after President Trump's inauguration. The Trump administration has argued that DOGE is not a federal agency subject to Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests and that the demands for information are "extraordinarily overbroad and intrusive." The discovery process would have required the government to provide records and testimony, potentially including a deposition by DOGE Administrator Amy Gleason.

Chief Justice John Roberts' order does not provide reasons for the decision and only applies until the full court can issue a more permanent ruling on the matter. The ruling comes after the government named Gleason as the head of DOGE to distance Musk from the agency as its operations faced increased scrutiny. DOGE has been controversial for its lack of transparency and the sweeping changes it has sought to impose on the federal government.
