The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has pledged to intensify efforts to ensure compliance with the N70,000 National Minimum Wage across the country. The NLC President, Comrade Joe Ajaero, made this known during the 2025 Workers' Day celebration in Abuja, where he expressed concern over the continued non-compliance by some state governments and private sector employers.

Ajaero lamented the economic hardship faced by workers and the non-implementation of the agreed wage by some employers, which has exacerbated the challenges workers are facing, including rising inflation and job insecurity. He emphasized that the NLC would engage in fresh rounds of engagements, mobilizations, and legal actions to ensure that the law is upheld.

The NLC President also called for unity among workers and drew inspiration from past struggles, emphasizing the need to fight against poor governance and exploitation. He highlighted the importance of a comprehensive wage review to address the cost of living, which has been rising significantly.

Previously, the NLC had criticized several state governments for not fully implementing the new minimum wage and consequential salary adjustments. Ajaero mentioned that despite the introduction of the new wage, workers are still earning less due to tax deductions and the effects of inflation.

The renewed push for compliance underscores the persistent challenges faced by the Nigerian workforce, and the critical role of the NLC in advocating for their rights and welfare.
