The Alberta government has introduced a 10-year action plan to combat gender-based violence, which includes more than 100 initiatives focused on awareness, prevention, intervention, and long-term support for survivors. Status of Women Minister Tanya Fir highlighted the importance of addressing financial insecurity as a root cause and committed to supporting Indigenous-led solutions. The government also plans to begin reporting annual rates of gender-based violence in the province starting next year. While this strategy includes additional funding, opposition critic Julia Hayter from the NDP argues that immediate action is necessary for those currently in need, such as those facing barriers to accessing shelter beds.
