Premier Smith
Albertans are entitled to elections that are equitable, secure, and accurately represent the genuine preferences of the populace. Therefore, our government is proposing the Election Statutes Amendment Act, which includes the following suggested modifications:
• Prohibiting the use of electronic tabulators and other automated voting devices, mandating that all ballots be counted manually to safeguard the integrity of elections. • Abolishing vouching at polling places to reinforce identification and verification procedures.
• Mandating that unofficial vote counts be finalized within 12 hours after the polls close to ensure prompt and dependable results.
• Requiring voters to cast their ballots in their home constituencies or by requesting a special ballot.
• Broadening access to special ballots, permitting any voter to request one without needing to provide justification, while ensuring integrity by necessitating that voters personally request their special ballot (with exceptions for those requiring assistance due to disabilities).
• Revising the Recall Act to facilitate the accountability of elected officials by reducing the signature requirement and extending the period for signature collection. • Enhancing the Citizen Initiative Act process by establishing a threshold of 10 percent of eligible voters who participated in the previous general election for all successful petitions.
• Allowing corporate and union contributions for provincial elections while ensuring transparency and accountability through existing financial disclosure regulations.
• Improving voting access for First Nations and Métis Settlements during referendums and Senate elections.
• Strengthening emergency response measures for voting disruptions during referendums and Senate elections.
