Former President Muhammadu Buhari has reiterated his dedication to the All Progressives Congress (APC) amidst a wave of defections from the party. This declaration follows the announcement by former Kaduna State Governor, Nasiru El-Rufai, regarding his departure from the APC to join the Social Democratic Party (SDP). El-Rufai asserted that his exit was made with Buhari's full awareness and approval. In addition to El-Rufai, numerous APC members from Kaduna State have also defected, intensifying speculation about a potential political coalition aimed at opposing President Bola Tinubu in the lead-up to the 2027 elections. In light of these developments, Buhari, through a statement issued by his spokesperson, Garba Shehu, sought to quell any uncertainties regarding his allegiance to the APC. He emphasized his unwavering commitment to the party that facilitated his rise to power. "Without referencing any specific individuals, groups, or current issues being deliberated by party leaders at various levels, former President Muhammadu Buhari has once again affirmed his membership in the All Progressives Congress, APC, and wishes to be recognized as a loyal member of the party. He aims to eliminate any doubts about his steadfastness to the organization that granted him two terms in office and is determined to promote it in every possible way. 'I am an APC member, and I prefer to be addressed as such.

I will endeavor to enhance the party's visibility by all means.' Buhari also expressed his appreciation for the support he received from the APC during his presidency, regarding it as the highest honor. He further remarked that the sacrifices made by the founding members to establish a robust party dedicated to safeguarding our constitution and democracy are commendable efforts that deserve to be valued and nurtured."
