In a harrowing incident, a family of four, including a one-year-old and a two-year-old, was rescued by the RCMP early Thursday morning after they crossed the U.S. border into Canada and found themselves lost in the woods of Havelock, Que.

According to RCMP Cpl. Martina Pillarova, when they were located, the family was suffering from severe hypothermia. Pillarova noted, "They were in a very bad state. They were not able to move anymore. They were frozen."

The family likely lost their way after entering Canada, reportedly wandering for hours before the mother managed to contact emergency services via 911. "The Sûreté du Québec received that call and then reached out to us for backup around 3:15 AM," Pillarova explained. This crucial alert enabled authorities to obtain GPS coordinates, helping to pinpoint their location and streamline the search.

Fortunately, within an hour of the call, the family was discovered huddled beneath a tree, unable to move. The parents were found without shoes, having reportedly lost their boots in a nearby body of water, while the children were underdressed for the cold conditions, wearing only shoes and sneakers without proper winter attire.

"The children were in a bad, bad condition," Pillarova remarked, highlighting the urgency of the situation.

The family was carefully extracted from the woods and transported to a nearby ambulance—about a kilometer away on Covey Hill Road—with the mother being carried on a sled, while officers cradled the young children in their arms. The father was rescued shortly thereafter.

Local firefighters and the Sûreté du Québec played significant roles in the successful rescue operation. By Friday afternoon, Pillarova confirmed that all family members were in stable condition and receiving care in the hospital. The RCMP also reported that the family has requested refugee status, with the Canadian Border Services Agency now overseeing their case.
