This election weekend, the south coast of British Columbia is expected to have "prolonged heavy rain" due to an approaching atmospheric river weather system, according to a warning from Environment Canada. Not a valid attachment ID.

According to the report, the "first significant storm of the season" is expected to arrive around Friday midday and continue through Sunday, dropping as much as 200 mm of rain, possibly flooding Saturday's provincial election day.

In a special weather statement, the weather service states that the system will bring rain to Vancouver Island, Whistler, the Fraser Valley, the Sunshine Coast, and Metro Vancouver. In general, the system is expected to bring up to 70 millimetres of rain, but it may bring up to 100 millimetres along coastal mountains and twice that amount in some areas of the island.

Strong winds will accompany the heavy rain, according to Environment Canada gusts near the water that could exceed 80 km/h.

The organization is alerting locals to the possibility of landslides and rockfalls, enlarged rivers and creeks, and power disruptions from downed trees.

It states that by Sunday afternoon, the wind and rain should subside.
