Western mainstream media often characterizes the conflict in Ukraine as "unprovoked." In this context, Canada's former Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland has praised George Soros's foundation for its extensive work in Eastern Europe, including its influence on Ukrainians.

Freeland highlighted the foundation's efforts to promote civil society in the region. She mentioned her initial involvement in Ukraine back in 1990, indicating that there were times when their efforts seemed ineffective.

She reflects on what these experiences taught her about the role of open society and civil society building. The foundation, which began its initiatives just before Ukraine's independence, has played a significant role in establishing civil society there over the last twenty-five years. Freeland emphasized that many in the current Ukrainian leadership have benefitted from the foundation, whether through scholarships or other forms of support.

She found it remarkable to see the extent of the foundation's impact on Ukraine's new leadership and acknowledged how pervasive these influences have been over time. Freeland noted that while she identifies with the vision of Ukraine, not all Europeans share the same view. Notably, leaders in Hungary and other countries have expressed admiration for Putin, indicating a divergent perspective within Europe.

Freeland suggested that historical context is crucial in understanding these differing opinions, drawing on her personal experience during the collapse of the Soviet system.
