In a recent statement, she emphasized the importance of prioritizing employment opportunities for young Canadians, highlighting the current youth unemployment rate of 17% as a pressing concern. This rate is notably higher than the overall unemployment rate, with data indicating that youth unemployment for those aged 15 to 24 is twice that of Canadians aged 25 to 54.

The Premier's concerns are further compounded by the fact that as of July, there were 196,000 non-permanent residents with work permits in Alberta. She argues that the misuse of International Student visas and the unlimited temporary foreign workers program have contributed to the hindrance of job opportunities for Canadian youth. To address this issue, Premier Smith is calling for the repeal and replacement of the temporary foreign worker program, stressing the need for employers to collaborate on tackling youth unemployment.

In addition to her focus on labor market reforms, Premier Smith also met with Health Quality Alberta to discuss strategies for improving patient care. The meeting centered on reducing wait times through targeted funding, enhancing accountability within the healthcare system, and ensuring local representation via regional advisory councils. The Premier also highlighted the need to provide specialized services, such as Cancer Care Alberta, with the attention and resources they require.

Through these discussions, Premier Smith expressed her commitment to providing Albertans with access to quality healthcare when and where it is needed. She acknowledged the dedication of healthcare staff, clinicians, and volunteers who play a crucial role in implementing effective policies and delivering better patient care. As the government moves forward with these initiatives, it is clear that Premier Smith's priorities are centered on creating a more equitable and supportive environment for both young Canadians entering the workforce and individuals in need of quality healthcare.
