Canada Reaffirms Unwavering Support for Ukraine's Struggle for Democracy

As the international rules-based order faces unprecedented pressure, Ukraine remains at the forefront of the battle for democracy and freedom. Today, on the 34th anniversary of Ukraine's independence, Prime Minister Mark Carney reiterated Canada's steadfast commitment to Ukraine's quest for a just and lasting peace.

During a visit to Kyiv, the Prime Minister announced a comprehensive package of military assistance, humanitarian aid, and investments to counter digital threats to Ukrainian democracy. This significant commitment builds upon Canada's previous support, solidifying its position as a leading ally in Ukraine's struggle against Russian aggression.

The Government of Canada has allocated $2 billion in military assistance, which will be utilized to procure critical equipment, including armoured vehicles, medical supplies, and advanced drone capabilities. Additionally, Canada will provide approximately $680 million to enhance Ukraine's air defence capabilities and strengthen its military infrastructure.

Furthermore, Canada has pledged an additional $31 million for humanitarian initiatives and investments in counter-disinformation efforts to protect Ukrainian democracy. Since the start of Russia's full-scale invasion in February 2022, Canada has committed nearly $22 billion in multi-faceted assistance, demonstrating its unwavering commitment to Ukraine's sovereignty and security.

In Kyiv, Prime Minister Carney met with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko, and Ukrainian Cabinet ministers to discuss Canada's collaborative efforts with Ukraine and its partners in the Coalition of the Willing. The leaders concurred that no decisions about Ukraine should be made without Ukraine, and no decisions about Europe should be made without Europe.

As Co-Chair of the International Coalition for the Return of Ukrainian Children, Prime Minister Carney emphasized Canada's dedication to securing the immediate and unconditional return of Ukrainian children. Canada will intensify its work with Ukraine, European partners, and the United States to achieve this goal.

"Ukraine is the frontline of the struggle for democracy and freedom, and Canada is proud to stand alongside its people," said Prime Minister Carney. "We will continue to work tirelessly with our allies and partners to ensure Ukraine has the support it needs to defend its sovereignty and fight against Russia's illegal war."

The Honourable David J. McGuinty, Minister of National Defence, echoed the Prime Minister's sentiments, highlighting Canada's commitment to providing Ukraine with the military assistance it needs to protect its people and territory.

This visit marks a significant milestone in Canada-Ukraine relations, as the two nations continue to work together to promote peace, security, and democracy in the face of authoritarian aggression.
