Behind the pomp and ceremony of Australian honours and awards lies a meticulous process, ensured by a small but dedicated team at the Australian Honours and Awards Secretariat. Based at Government House in Canberra, this team is responsible for guaranteeing that the investitures of Australian honours and awards are conducted to the highest standard, making each event a significant and memorable experience for the recipients.

As a member of the secretariat, Leonie plays a vital role in managing the intricate process of engraving, preparing, and dispatching insignia across the country. This enables State Governors and the Northern Territory Administrator to confer honours upon deserving individuals in their respective states or territories, surrounded by their loved ones.

As the Spring investiture ceremonies approach, Government House will once again host this esteemed event, accompanied by ceremonies in each state and territory. This year marks a significant milestone – the fiftieth anniversary of the honours and awards system. As medals and honours are delivered to the residences of the governors, it is essential to appreciate the effort and dedication that goes into their distribution.

Leonie, with over two years of experience, walked us through the meticulous steps involved in preparing the medals. Twice a year, following the announcements for Australia Day and the King's Birthday, her team receives the engraving lists to initiate the medal preparation process. In New South Wales alone, approximately 235 medals, including the prestigious Order of Australia, Meritorious Service awards, and bravery decorations, are carefully prepared for delivery to Government House.

Each medal is crafted according to rigorous standards and meticulously engraved with the recipient's name. Once engraved, the medals are carefully packaged alongside the insignia and decorations that recipients will receive. The highest honour, the Companion award, comes with lapel pins that can be worn on various occasions, as well as a miniature version.

In addition to the medals and insignia, recipients receive a beautifully crafted box containing care instructions for their medals and additional items that accompany the awards. These include the Meritorious Service awards and significant Civilian Bravery awards, presented during emotional and meaningful investiture ceremonies that acknowledge the outstanding contributions of Australian citizens.

The team's attention to detail and commitment to excellence ensure that each investiture ceremony is a dignified and memorable experience for the recipients, celebrating their remarkable achievements and service to the nation.
