The President of Nigeria, Bola Tinubu, has given instructions for the swift implementation of a free healthcare initiative for low-income retirees who are part of the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS). This move is aimed at providing essential social protection and maintaining their dignity post-retirement. Additionally, President Tinubu has called for the immediate execution of long-delayed pension increases and the establishment of a minimum pension guarantee to assist the most vulnerable pensioners within the CPS framework.

Ms. Omolola Oloworaran, the Director General of the National Pension Commission (PenCom), presented a briefing to President Tinubu regarding these matters. The President emphasized the urgent need to address the persistent police pension issue, ensuring that those who have served the nation in the police force can retire with respect and financial security.

Ms. Oloworaran also informed the President about efforts to preserve the value of pension fund assets amidst inflation and broader economic challenges. Furthermore, she discussed plans to introduce foreign currency contributions to allow Nigerians living abroad to participate in the pension system.

Expressing his strong support for the proposed reforms, President Tinubu reiterated his administration's dedication to fostering inclusive growth and safeguarding the welfare of ordinary citizens. The President's directives follow a comprehensive briefing on various pension enhancement initiatives intended to improve the overall wellbeing of retirees.

The President's Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, released this statement on August 6, 2025, highlighting the government's commitment to the welfare of pensioners and the continuous evolution of the nation's pension system.
