Honoring the Brave: Lest We Forget

As the Governor-General stood amidst the solemn grounds of Kranji War Cemetery and Memorial, she was poignant in her reflection on the significance of this sacred site. Accompanied by Jeremy, a seasoned educator and guide from the Commonwealth War Graves, as well as students Claire and Matilda from the Australian International School, she paid tribute to the courageous Australian servicemen and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of Singapore during World War II.

Prime Minister John Curtin's words echoed in her mind - "Australia's Dunkirk" - as she contemplated the immense sacrifices made by those who fought against all odds to protect this nation. The strong bond of friendship and trust between Australia and Singapore, forged in the crucible of war, remains a testament to their bravery and selflessness.

As she gazed upon the rows of graves and the memorial walls, the Governor-General was deeply moved by the sheer scale of sacrifice. Alongside His Excellency High Commissioner Allaster Cox, High Commissioner Anil Kumar Nayar, and the students, she laid a wreath in honor of all Australian and Allied service personnel who gave their lives in the pursuit of freedom. The act served as a poignant reminder of the debt of gratitude we owe to these heroes.

Jeremy's poignant recounting of individual stories of valor and sacrifice, including those of women from the Australian Army Nursing Service and the Australian Red Cross, brought home the human cost of war. The Governor-General was struck by the selflessness and devotion of these men and women, whose contributions built the foundation of the strong friendship and cooperation we enjoy today.

As the ceremony came to a close, the Governor-General's words resonated deeply: "Lest We Forget." Let us never forget the sacrifices made by our brave servicemen and women, and may their legacy continue to inspire future generations to strive for peace, cooperation, and understanding.

The visit to Kranji War Cemetery and Memorial served as a powerful reminder of the importance of honoring our past, while forging a brighter future for all.
