Premier Smith has articulated Alberta's position that the federal immigration strategy implemented by Ottawa is unsustainable and inequitable. She asserts that it requires a recalibration to prioritize economic migrants. In the previous year, Canada welcomed nearly 2 million newcomers, which has placed considerable strain on provincial housing, healthcare, and education infrastructures. Alberta has sought a greater role in the selection of immigrants who are prepared to work and contribute to the economy; however, Ottawa has responded by reducing the provincial nominee program by 50%. It is imperative that we establish a system that is effective not only for newcomers but also for the communities that embrace them. A logical and sustainable approach is now overdue.
