Makenna Cyr, a team penner from Port Alberni, British Columbia, recently competed at the Calgary Stampede, one of the largest rodeos in the world. This was not only her first time competing at the Stampede, but also her first time attending the event. Despite being overwhelmed by the size of the arena and the crowds, Cyr's team managed to place an impressive 13th out of 200 teams in the team penning event.

Team penning involves three riders on horses working together to separate and herd three specifically numbered cattle out of a herd of 30 and into a pen at the opposite end of the arena within the shortest amount of time possible. Cyr explained that good communication and coordination among the team members is essential for success, as the cattle can be unpredictable.

Cyr's journey with horses began with barrel racing before she discovered team penning, which combines her love for horses and her background in working with cattle from her time in 4-H. She started with a pet guinea pig in the program and eventually moved on to larger animals like cows and horses, which led to her involvement in the agricultural community.

The Calgary Stampede was a significant milestone for Cyr, and she expressed her gratitude for the local businesses that sponsored her trip, including Twin City Brewing, Alberni District Co-Op, The Knotty Cowgirl, Evolution Equestrian, Circle M Farm in Qualicum Beach, and Island Horse Blanket Cleaning and Repair. Their support made it possible for her to participate in the high-profile event.

The experience was a memorable one for Cyr, as she not only competed against top teams from around the world but also had the opportunity to interact with fans and share her love for the sport and her rural lifestyle with children. She noted the importance of these types of interactions for the future of rodeo and agriculture.

Cyr's success at the Calgary Stampede showcases her dedication and skill in the sport of team penning and serves as an inspiration to others in the community looking to pursue their passions.
