Dear Prime Minister and Federal Government Officials,

We, the governments of Alberta and Ontario, are writing to express our collective concern and urgency regarding the current federal policies that are detrimental to our provinces' economies and, by extension, the entire nation of Canada. These policies, while well-intended, have shown no significant environmental benefits and instead have created a series of punitive measures that stifle growth and investment across various sectors, particularly in our oil and gas industries.

For too long, our provinces have faced unprecedented challenges due to the federal government's overreach into areas of provincial jurisdiction. This letter serves as a formal request for the immediate review and repeal of several federal policies that are causing undue harm to our economies without delivering the promised environmental advantages.

The following federal policies are of particular concern:

1. Oil and Gas Production Cap: This policy limits the potential growth of our oil and gas sectors, which are vital to our economies and Canada's energy security. It sends a negative signal to investors, hinders innovation, and does not account for the strides our provinces have made in reducing emissions intensity.

2. Impact Assessment Act and Physical Activities Regulations: These regulations have created unnecessary red tape, causing project delays and regulatory uncertainty. The resulting investment decline is a significant barrier to economic development and job creation. We believe in responsible environmental stewardship, but the current framework is overly burdensome and fails to balance economic and environmental considerations effectively.

3. Clean Electricity Regulations: While we support the transition to cleaner energy sources, these regulations are a one-size-fits-all approach that does not consider the unique circumstances of each province. They threaten the reliability and affordability of our power grids, which are essential to support our growing industries and communities.

4. Greenhouse Gas Pollution Pricing Act: This act imposes a federal carbon tax that disproportionately affects provinces with carbon-intensive industries, such as Alberta and Ontario. It does not provide a level playing field for businesses and fails to recognize the substantial efforts made by provinces with their own emission reduction strategies.

Our provinces are committed to environmental sustainability and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. However, we firmly believe that the federal government's current approach is misguided and does not reflect the diversity of Canada's provinces and their individual economic realities. We are calling for a collaborative and respectful relationship that allows provinces to implement their own tailored strategies for environmental protection, while also fostering economic prosperity.

We request that the federal government immediately:

- Respect provincial jurisdiction over the development and regulation of our natural resources.
- Work with provinces to establish clear and predictable regulatory frameworks that encourage investment and innovation.
- Recognize and support the efforts of provinces with strong environmental records and tailor policies accordingly.
- Re-evaluate the effectiveness of existing federal environmental policies in achieving their intended goals without harming our economies.

We stand ready to work constructively with the federal government to create a Canada that is both economically vibrant and environmentally responsible. We look forward to your response and the initiation of meaningful dialogue to address these pressing issues.

Thank you for your attention to this critical matter.
