Japan has executed a man who took the lives of nine people in 2017, marking the first instance of capital punishment being carried out in the country since 2022.
The series of murders committed by Takahiro Shiraishi, referred to as the 'Twitter killer', sent shockwaves throughout the nation and sparked discussions regarding the portrayal of suicide on online platforms.
At the time of the crimes, Shiraishi was 30 years old and he lured his victims—predominantly young women aged between 15 and 26—to his apartment, where he subsequently strangled and dismembered them.
The horrific acts were uncovered in October 2017, when law enforcement discovered body parts in Zama, a city in Japan located near Tokyo, while searching for one of the missing individuals.
