The Nigerian government has invalidated degrees obtained from certain universities in Cotonou, Benin Republic. This decision mainly targets degrees awarded by unaccredited institutions, which the Nigerian authorities believe do not meet the academic standards required for recognition in Nigeria.

The decision was made in response to concerns over the quality of education provided by these institutions. Many Nigerian students had been enrolling in these universities due to their lower admission requirements and shorter duration of study. However, the Nigerian government has raised issues regarding the authenticity of the degrees, the lack of proper accreditation, and the inadequate curriculum offered by some of these schools.

This move by the Nigerian government is part of a broader effort to ensure that only degrees from accredited and recognized institutions are accepted in the country. It is also aimed at curbing the proliferation of substandard educational institutions that have sprung up in neighboring countries, particularly in Benin Republic, and are attracting Nigerian students.

Students who have obtained degrees from these institutions may need to seek further clarification from the Nigerian Ministry of Education or the National Universities Commission (NUC) on the status of their qualifications and possible steps they may need to take to validate their academic credentials.
