Air guns are increasingly becoming a public safety issue in Calgary.

The Calgary Police Service (CPS) is urging residents to be aware of the increasing public safety issues stemming from the use of air guns in the city. Airsoft, pellet, and BB guns have been involved in several incidents, leading to emergency police responses and injuries. These weapons are often indistinguishable from real firearms, causing fear and confusion among bystanders and officers.

Staff Sgt. Chris Tudor of the Firearms Investigative Unit emphasized that the fear experienced when encountering an air gun is genuine and can lead to dangerous situations. CPS data shows that half of the incidents this year have involved youth, highlighting the need for better education and awareness of the risks and consequences.

Staff Sgt. Sarah Roe of the Youth Education Unit pointed out that many young individuals might not comprehend the gravity of their actions with these weapons. It's essential for parents and guardians to communicate the seriousness of air gun use and the potential legal repercussions.

The CPS has seen a significant rise in air gun seizures, with 817 confiscated in 2024 and 333 already taken in the first five months of 2025. The discharge of an air gun within Calgary city limits is against the law, and using them to threaten or harm others can result in Criminal Code charges.

To promote community safety, CPS advises the following:

1. It is illegal to discharge an air gun within city limits.
2. Use air guns in safe, controlled environments with adult supervision.
3. Do not carry or display air guns in public.
4. Store air guns securely, out of reach of children.
5. Educate children about the legal and safety implications of air gun use.

The police encourage the public to report any concerns or information regarding the unsafe use of air guns by calling 403-266-1234 or 911 in emergencies.

- Good morning. Following several incidents involving youth in our city, we are here today raising awareness about the public safety risks associated with the use of air guns, including airsoft pellet and BB guns.

In two thousand and twenty-four, eight hundred and seventeen air guns were seized in Calgary so far.

- This year half of the incidents have involved youth in our city. We're dealing with at least one air gun incident a day in the city of Calgary as an example. Earlier this month, CPS responded to eight incidents alone in one day. We all have a role to play in keeping our community safe.

- They should have conversations with their kids so that youth understand the risks of using these guns. Specifically, we would like to remind everyone that it's illegal to discharge an airgun within city limits. Airguns should be used only in a safe and controlled environment while being supervised. Never carry on.or display arrogance and public store aragon securely and out of reach of children and also to educate youth on risks and safety concerns related to this arrogance.
