The average number of sperm in one milliliter (ml) of semen for a healthy adult male is typically around 15 million to 200 million. This can vary widely among individuals, with some having more and some having less. For fertility purposes, a sperm count of at least 15 million sperm per ml is generally considered normal. However, it's not just the quantity that matters; the quality, motility (the ability of sperm to move efficiently), and morphology (sperm shape) also play significant roles in fertility.

The number of sperm inside a female after sexual intercourse can vary widely. During a single act of unprotected intercourse, a man can release anywhere from tens of millions to hundreds of millions of sperm cells. However, only a small fraction of these sperm cells will actually make it to the fallopian tubes where fertilization occurs. The actual number of sperm that reach the egg can be significantly lower due to various factors such as the woman's natural defense mechanisms, the health and viability of the sperm, and the timing of the encounter relative to ovulation.

Once in the female reproductive tract, the sperm must navigate through the cervix, uterus, and into the fallopian tubes. The acidic environment of the vagina and the presence of cervical mucus can kill or slow down many sperm cells. Additionally, the woman's immune system can attack and destroy sperm cells that are perceived as foreign.
