The UK is experiencing an intense heatwave with temperatures reaching up to 34C, prompting the Met Office to issue a yellow storm warning for parts of northern England, the Scottish Borders, and Wales due to the risk of thunderstorms.

The heat and humidity are expected to fuel torrential downpours and potentially cause localized flash flooding, large hail, and frequent lightning strikes. Additionally, the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has put an amber heat-health alert in place until Monday, highlighting the likely significant pressure on health and social care services and an increase in deaths among the elderly and those with health conditions.

The heatwave is a result of an area of high pressure drawing hot weather from Western Europe, with France and Spain expecting temperatures near 40C. The high temperatures have led to a surge in wildfires across England and Wales, with the National Fire Chiefs Council expressing concern over the increased threat of wildfires this summer. The UKHSA is advising the public to take precautions during this time, especially for vulnerable individuals, and to be aware of the dangers of heat exposure.

While the heatwave is not yet at the peak levels seen in 1976, it is still significantly higher than the 2024 average. Scientists have noted that climate change is making heatwaves hotter and longer, with the likelihood of reaching 32C in June having increased 100 times since the pre-industrial era. This trend is expected to continue, with each additional fraction of a degree of warming leading to more extreme heatwaves.

To cope with the hot weather, people are advised to stay hydrated, avoid spending time in the sun during peak hours, and check on vulnerable neighbors and relatives. It's also important to be mindful of the increased fire risk and to follow safety advice when outdoors or cooking. Despite the intense heat, some relief is expected on Sunday, with temperatures dropping to the high 20s in the south and east of England, and further cooling into the new week. However, there is a chance of temperatures rising towards the heatwave threshold again later in the week.
