Joint Statement: Sabeto River Water Quality Update and Regulatory Actions Following the Discharge Incident on May 22

The joint statement by the Ministry of Lands and Mineral Resources (MLMR) and the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change (MECC) addresses the recent incident of wastewater discharge into the Sabeto River on 22nd May 2025. Both ministries are handling the situation with urgency and transparency, aiming to ensure the safety of the community and the environment.

Initial water sampling has shown that the water quality in the affected upper Sabeto River has returned to safe levels for most uses, but as a precaution, treated water should not be consumed due to livestock activity nearby. The discharge from the identified source, the settlement pond operated by Lion One, has been suspended until full compliance with environmental standards is verified.

Lion One has taken responsibility and is working on setting up a new pre-treatment facility, enhancing monitoring systems, and fostering better communication with local communities. Both ministries will conduct environmental audits over the next six months to ensure long-term improvements in the company's practices.

The government appreciates the community's cooperation and assures that a comprehensive report will be provided upon completion of all assessments. This collaborative approach reflects the commitment of the People's Coalition to protect the environment and the public's health.
