The Prime Minister of Fiji, Honourable Sitiveni Rabuka, recently attended and officiated the 53rd Annual Congress of the Fiji Institute of Chartered Accountants (FICA). The event, held at Nadi's Crowne Plaza Resort and Spa, brought together various stakeholders to address the country's economic challenges and opportunities ahead. The Congress's theme, "Shaping Fiji for Tomorrow's Challenges and Opportunities," emphasized the importance of the accounting profession in navigating the nation through its economic journey.

The Prime Minister acknowledged FICA's significant contributions over the past 53 years, highlighting the organization's role in building trusted professionals who have influenced Fiji's financial governance and policy-making. He stressed the critical importance of the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) sector in the nation's economic recovery and the need for collaboration between the government and the accounting profession to support this sector.

The Prime Minister also focused on the importance of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles, particularly in the context of Fiji's vulnerability to climate change. He encouraged FICA to lead in ESG reporting and sustainability, as well as in developing the capacity to address climate finance issues. Additionally, Rabuka urged the profession to prepare for the future by embracing digital technology, upskilling, and reaching out to women, rural communities, and youth to ensure inclusive growth.

The event included the MSME Conference, reflecting the government's commitment to fostering a strong partnership between policy and practical solutions for the sector's development. The Prime Minister called upon the young professionals in the accounting field to be bold, ethical, and innovative, reminding them of their role as nation-builders in the coming decades.

FICA's legacy of excellence and integrity was praised, and the organization's continued efforts to adapt to the evolving global landscape were encouraged. The Congress aimed to provide a platform for discussing and implementing strategies that would enhance Fiji's resilience, inclusiveness, and readiness for the future.
