No Work Stoppage at Canada Post; Workers Asked to Refuse Overtime

Canada Post workers are not going on strike as initially planned, following a meeting between the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUP-W) and the corporation. Instead, CUP-W members have been instructed to refuse overtime work starting today. The union had issued a strike notice that was set to take effect at midnight, but chose this alternative after the discussions.

Canada Post has assured the public that there are currently no rotating strikes or work stoppages, and mail service will continue to operate as usual, with some potential delays due to the overtime ban. The union is advocating for better wage and part-time work conditions, as the company's latest offer of a 13 percent wage increase over four years is considered inadequate compared to the 19 percent raise that workers are demanding to keep pace with inflation.

The union is still in the process of reviewing Canada Post's latest offers and negotiations are ongoing. The decision to refuse overtime is a temporary measure that allows mail service to be maintained while putting pressure on the corporation to address the outstanding issues. The situation remains fluid, and further actions may be taken if an agreement is not reached.
