The Federal Government has been urged by the Niger Delta Budget Monitoring Group to look into allegations of human rights breaches that happened during the statewide hunger protests that started on Thursday, August 1, 2024. The group emphasized that the government must guarantee democratic freedom and protect the civic space in a statement signed by High Chief Anthony George-Hill, its CEO, and Stiv Obodoekwe, a member of the Nigeria Civic Space Protection Alliance. After receiving two days of training in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, on civic space protection, the group released this statement. The government must always uphold and defend citizens' human rights, according to the statement. In order to allow people to breathe and exercise their rights, the government should establish a supportive environment.
