This will be Crosby's second time leading the team, having previously captained Canada at the 4 Nations Face-Off in February, where he played a pivotal role in securing a gold medal. At 37 years old, this tournament will mark Crosby's fifth occasion serving as captain for Canada, following his leadership at the 2014 Olympics, the 2015 World Championship, and the 2016 World Cup of Hockey, all of which he led to victory. Additionally, he earned an Olympic gold medal as an alternate captain in the 2010 Vancouver Games under Scott Niedermayer.

Crosby will reunite with his friend and fellow Nova Scotian, Nathan MacKinnon, who was also selected for Team Canada after his team, the Colorado Avalanche, was eliminated in the first round of the Stanley Cup playoffs. The two previously collaborated on the gold-winning team at the 2015 World Championship. The tournament will take place in Europe, with matches scheduled in Stockholm, Sweden, and Herning, Denmark, commencing on Friday. This event serves as the final international competition for men before the 2026 Winter Olympics in Italy, where NHL players will return after a 12-year hiatus. By winning the tournament in Prague, Crosby became a member of the prestigious Triple Gold Club, which includes players who have achieved victory in the Stanley Cup, the Olympics, and the World Championship.

This will be Crosby's third World Championship appearance, and his first since 2015, adding to his accolades as a three-time Stanley Cup champion (2009, 2016, and 2017) and a two-time Olympic gold medalist (2010 and 2014). He has consistently brought home gold for Canada in every international tournament, including the 2016 World Cup of Hockey and the 2005 IIHF World Junior Championship. Crosby recently concluded another outstanding season with the Penguins, achieving an NHL record with his 20th consecutive point-per-game.
