The assault occurred early in the morning, around 1 a.m., and was noted by the Emir of Gwoza, Alhaji Mohammed Shehu Timta. He confirmed that in addition to the Army Captain, another soldier also lost his life during the attack. "It's true that my people in Izge community came under Boko Haram attack around 1 a.m. Unfortunately, we lost a Captain and a Soldier," he stated. Timta added that the brave response from the troops, along with support from the Civilian JTF, local hunters, vigilantes, and resilient community members led to the death of three militants. The attackers fled the scene, abandoning their weapons and more than ten motorcycles, with security forces still in pursuit of them. "May Allah (SWT) grant the departed souls Jannatul Firdaus. Our gallant men remain in the bush, sacrificing their lives for peace in the community," he expressed. The ongoing violence from various terrorist groups has deeply impacted Nigerian states.
A report by SBM Intelligence revealed that over 2,000 individuals were killed in Nigeria during the first quarter of 2025, including 136 security personnel. Borno State reported the highest death toll, with 515 fatalities, followed by Zamfara with 408. Other states such as Katsina, Benue, Niger, Anambra, Edo, Ondo, and Kaduna also experienced significant losses. The detailed breakdown included 892 civilians, 462 bandits, 119 vigilantes, 234 Boko Haram members, 42 kidnappers, and 66 cultists among the dead.
Previously, Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum expressed concern over the escalating insecurity in the region. While acknowledging the Nigerian Army's kinetic strategies, he emphasized the need for non-kinetic approaches as well, highlighting that over 300,000 repentant Boko Haram fighters, some of whom are farmers, have been integrated back into the community over the past three years.
