Born around 1852 in the town of Ode-Itsekiri, Nana Olomu rose to prominence through his involvement in the palm oil trade, which was the major economic activity in the Niger Delta at the time. He established a vast network of trade routes and built a substantial fortune, making him one of the wealthiest and most influential individuals in the area. His wealth allowed him to gain political power and respect among his people and the British colonizers.
Under his leadership, the Itsekiri people, a sub-group of the larger Yoruba ethnic group, expanded their territory and influence, leading to the creation of the Warri Kingdom. Nana Olomu maintained a close relationship with the British, which was crucial for the protection and advancement of his interests and those of his people. He signed treaties with the British that granted them access to the palm oil resources in the region, in exchange for military and diplomatic support against rival groups.

In 1884, he signed the Treaty of Protection with the British, which allowed for the establishment of a British Protectorate over the Warri Kingdom. This treaty also granted the British monopoly rights over the palm oil trade, which significantly boosted the British presence and economic interests in the area. Despite this, Nana Olomu was able to maintain a degree of autonomy and continued to rule as a traditional leader.
He was known for his strategic thinking and diplomatic skills, which he employed to navigate the complex web of relationships between the British, other European powers, and local African groups. His reign saw the construction of roads, schools, and other infrastructure that facilitated trade and improved the quality of life for his people.
Nana Olomu faced several challenges, including internal strife within the Itsekiri community and external threats from neighboring ethnic groups such as the Ijaw and Urhobo. However, his leadership and alliances with the British helped to maintain relative peace and stability in the region.
In 1914, the British appointed Nana Olomu as the first Warri District Head, which was a recognition of his importance and the significance of the Warri Kingdom within the broader context of the Nigerian colonial administration. He held this position until his death in 1916.

Nana Olomu's legacy is mixed. While he is celebrated for his role in the development of the Warri Kingdom and for fostering peace and stability during his rule, some criticize his close ties with the British and the concessions he made to them.
