Osoyoos Desert in Canada. The Osoyoos Desert is a semi-arid region located in the southern interior of British Columbia, Canada. It is part of the larger Great Basin Desert that spans from Washington state in the United States into British Columbia. While Canada is not typically associated with deserts due to its cold climate, this small area is unique because it experiences hot, dry summers and relatively mild winters, allowing for desert-like conditions to develop.

The Osoyoos Desert is Canada's only true desert, characterized by its sand dunes, sagebrush, cacti, and rare species of flora and fauna. It is part of the Okanagan Desert, which is also known as the South Okanagan Grasslands Protected Area. This area covers approximately 26 square miles (67 square kilometers) and is considered the northernmost tip of the Sonoran Desert, which extends into the United States and Mexico.
The desert is home to the Osoyoos Indian Band, who are part of the Okanagan First Nation and have lived in the area for thousands of years. The name "Osoyoos" is derived from the word "Syilx" or "Okanagan" language, meaning "narrowing of the waters," which refers to the lake and the nearby town.
Tourism is a significant part of the local economy, with visitors drawn to the area's natural beauty, wineries, golf courses, and recreational opportunities, such as swimming in Osoyoos Lake, which is one of the warmest in Canada. The desert also offers unique educational experiences about desert ecosystems and conservation efforts at places like the Nk'Mip Desert Cultural Centre and the Osoyoos Desert Model Railroad.
