According to police statements shared with CHEK News, this unfortunate incident occurred earlier this month, and the investigation suggests that a combination of Dilaudid (Hydromorphone) and over-the-counter cough medicine may have led to the overdose. Constable Maury Tyre of the Campbell River RCMP emphasized the importance of educating both youth and parents about the dangers of all substances, including prescription and over-the-counter medications. He noted that while local law enforcement engages with students in schools and provides education on drugs and alcohol, there is a pressing need for this information to be disseminated more frequently within homes and the broader community.
"This type of tragedy can impact individuals across all demographics and socio-economic backgrounds, whether through addiction or experimentation," Tyre stated. The police are also advising parents to monitor their own prescription medications closely. "Drug users might purchase drugs, acquire them from their parents, or even take them from grandparents," Tyre explained. "It's vital to ensure that any medications you have are stored securely." When asked for the specific date of the incident, Tyre confirmed it occurred this month but withheld further details. "I feel deep sorrow for the youth; this crisis transcends demographics. The stories reflect a broad spectrum of experiences," Kerr remarked. "It's not just the homeless; it includes first-time users and accidental overdoses resulting from drugs mixed in various substances, often with fatal outcomes." Last week, the Campbell River School District (SD 72) announced upcoming online sessions aimed at developing substance use prevention strategies. The Ministry of Education and Child Care, alongside Dr. Hayley Watson, an adolescent clinical psychologist from Open Parachute, is organizing three free webinars, as noted by SD 72. Parents, guardians, and caregivers can learn to create personalized step-by-step plans to implement substance use prevention skills at home. Registration is required for the sessions scheduled for April 29, May 7, or May 8, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. More information is available online.
The Campbell River RCMP extends its heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of the deceased teen and has stated no further information regarding the case will be made public. To report any criminal activities, contact the local RCMP at 250-286-6221 or, for anonymous tips, Crimestoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
