NANAIMO: — Police are attempting to identify a woman who was seen walking a large dog in Lantzville earlier this week. According to the Mounties, a very large, grey dog with wiry fur, reminiscent of an Irish Wolfhound, bit a woman on Superior Rd., near the Island Hwy., on Wednesday, April 19, around 10:30 a.m.

Nanaimo RCMP Constable Gary O'Brien stated that the dog was on a leash and being walked by a woman when they encountered another woman coming from the opposite direction. "As the victim walked by, the dog turned aggressively towards her, pulling the woman walking it, and subsequently bit the victim on the arm," O'Brien explained. He described the situation as "quite a significant incident," noting that the victim required multiple stitches at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital.
Police are aware that the dog walker shared her first name with the victim but did not provide any further information before departing the scene. "We need to determine the dog's ownership and whether the individual was merely walking the dog or was its owner," O'Brien added. Separately, Nanaimo Animal Control Services is also investigating the incident.
While there are no available descriptions of the woman involved, O'Brien is encouraging anyone who may have been in the area at the time to check their dash cam footage and reach out to the detachment at 1-250-754-2345 with any information.
