A group of riders on dirt bikes sped across the WrestleMania stage before halting at the top. Then, Cody emerged through the stage wearing his American Nightmare mask, as "Kingdom" played, and he made his way down the ramp, hugging his family seated in the front row. Cena took control of the match early on, deliberately slowing the pace as he focused on wearing Cody down. The American Nightmare found it challenging to get any offense in for several minutes.

However, the momentum shifted when Cena attempted the Five Knuckle Shuffle, and Cody countered by poking him in the eye. He then followed up with a Disaster Kick and a Cody Cutter, earning a two-count. Cena responded with the Attitude Adjustment, but Cody kicked out at two. When Cena tried for the Five Knuckle Shuffle again, he finally succeeded. Cena attempted another AA, but Cody countered into a pinning predicament. Cody climbed to the top rope, but Cena knocked him down. Cena hoisted Cody onto his shoulders and executed the Attitude Adjustment from the second rope, yet the American Nightmare kicked out at two. Cody managed to hit another Cody Cutter for a two-count.
The champion sought to deliver Cross Rhodes, but Cena countered with a third Attitude Adjustment, followed by locking in the STF. Cody broke free and kicked Cena into the corner, accidentally colliding with the referee in the process. Cody hit Cross Rhodes, but without a referee to make the count, the pin was meaningless. While Cody checked on the referee, Cena took the opportunity to remove the pad from the top turnbuckle.
He slammed Cody's head into the exposed corner and executed a fourth AA. The referee regained consciousness just in time for Cena to make the pin, but to Cena's surprise, Cody kicked out. Travis Scott then made his entrance while Cena laughed. Scott walked down the ramp slowly, and Cena assisted him onto the apron, raising Scott's arm in triumph. Cena then carried Cody over to Travis Scott, but when Cody attempted to attack, Scott leaped off the apron. Cody hit the Cross Rhodes on Cena, but Travis Scott yanked the referee out of the ring before he could make the count. The American Nightmare challenged Scott to enter the ring. Scott jumped over the top rope, and Cody dared him to strike. Travis threw punches, but Cody successfully blocked the attacks and countered with the Cross Rhodes, sending Scott rolling out of the ring. However, when Cody turned around, Cena attempted to strike him with the WWE Championship. Cody blocked it and seized the belt from Cena. John Cena begged Cody not to hit him, but then delivered a low blow to Cody and picked up the belt again. Cena slammed the WWE Championship into Cody's head and called the referee back into the ring. John Cena then pinned Cody, securing the WWE Championship for the 17th time. After the match, John Cena celebrated with Travis Scott.
