Dr. Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, the former Special Adviser on Political Matters to President Bola Tinubu, has asserted that any politician hoping to win the Nigerian presidency in 2027 must secure the backing of the northern region. In a video interview shared with reporters, Baba-Ahmed, who was joined by Professor Usman Yusuf, the former Executive Secretary of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), stressed that the North will soon establish its political stance. "In the next six months, the North will make its choice clear. If others wish to align with us, that's fine; if not, we are prepared to forge our path.
One thing is certain: no one can ascend to the presidency without the support of the North," he stated. He expressed concern over the current state of the nation and urged northern voters to stay vigilant against divisive and deceptive political figures in the lead-up to the next elections. "We desire a government that comprehends our challenges and can tackle them effectively.
After eight years of Buhari, we've become more discerning. Now, in a new administration, we continue to face difficulties. Is lamentation all we are capable of?" Baba-Ahmed questioned. Reflecting on the past, he noted the severe impact of the Boko Haram insurgency on various communities—Muslims, Christians, Fulani, Baju, and others—which underscored the need for solidarity. "Before Buhari's tenure, Boko Haram was conducting attacks on mosques, churches, and cities like Abuja and Lagos. That crisis forced northerners to unite. Nowadays, no politician can simply appear and expect our obedience. Who are you to us?" he challenged. He cautioned against the further marginalization of the North, indicating that persistent neglect would lead to repercussions.
"If there are plans to manipulate the election, caution is advised. It would not bode well for Nigeria. The North is watching. Elders, the general populace, and interest groups will soon say 'enough is enough.' The injustice and marginalization must cease," he warned. Baba-Ahmed also encouraged the region to look beyond issues of identity politics, emphasizing that voters should prioritize competence and integrity. "We are weary of being misled into voting based on religion or ethnicity. That chapter is closed. We simply want a capable leader—someone who will address our needs," he stated. He concluded by reaffirming that the northern electorate has gained valuable insights from past experiences and will approach the 2027 election with a renewed perspective.
