In a recent image released by the Italian Alpine and Speleological Rescue Corps on April 17, 2025, rescuers are seen reaching for the wreckage of the cable car gondola near Naples in southern Italy. Reports indicate that a supporting cable broke, leading to the cabin's dramatic fall. Tragically, four individuals lost their lives, one person sustained serious injuries, and another is currently unaccounted for following the crash on Thursday near Naples, as stated by local rescue services and firefighters reporting by DWNEWS.

The incident transpired in the town of Castellammare di Stabia at Monte Faito. Umberto De Gregorio, chairman of the EAV public transport company that operates the cable car service, remarked, "The cabin at the top has crashed." The cable car, which offers stunning views of Mount Vesuvius and the Bay of Naples, had just reopened for the tourist season a week earlier. The ascent to the mountain, which stands 1,100 meters (3,600 feet) high, typically takes about 10 minutes. Rescue operations commenced on-site following the crash at Castellammare di Stabia, facing challenges due to fog and strong winds, as noted by Vincenzo De Luca, the head of the Campania region surrounding Naples.

At the time of the accident, another cable car was operating on the same route, but it was closer to the town, and all 16 passengers were safely evacuated. This recent incident is not the first deadly event involving the Monte Faito cable car; eight years after its opening in 1952, four people died when a cabin fell.
