Naples Emergency services have confirmed that four individuals lost their lives when a mountain cable car cabin fell to the ground near Naples, southern Italy. One more person has sustained severe injuries and is being airlifted to a medical facility, according to officials. Reports from Italian media indicate that a cable supporting a cabin higher up the mountain broke while the cable car was crossing the valley.
Regional president Vincenzo De Luca stated that all the victims were tourists. He also noted that adverse weather conditions, including fog, wind, and rain, have hindered rescue efforts at the crash site, which is situated at a high altitude. Earlier reports indicated that the cable car had stopped functioning, and several individuals were rescued from a second cabin located further down the valley. The mayor of Castellammare di Stabia, where the cable car is located, mentioned that it is believed a traction cable had snapped. "The emergency brake downstream operated correctly, but evidently, the one on the cabin that was nearly at the summit did not engage," he shared with Italian media.
He reassured that regular safety inspections had been conducted on the cable car system. This is a developing story, and further updates will be provided as more information becomes available. Please refresh the page for the latest details.
