I was thrilled to attend the launch of Thom Roberts' first solo exhibition, The Immersive World of Thom Roberts, at @portraitau, alongside his colleagues from Studio A—a studio committed to creating opportunities for artists with intellectual disabilities.

This exhibition features 100 striking and modern pieces that reflect Thom's prolific artistic journey, serving as a vibrant ode to his remarkable creativity and offering a unique perspective through his kaleidoscopic view of the world. Thom is known for giving new identities to those he encounters. During the launch, Governor-General Sam received the name "Excellent Tonio" from him.

Regarding the exhibition, Excellent Tonio remarked: "It is an honor to collaborate with the Australian National Veterans Arts Museum, Bus Stop Films, Down Syndrome Australia, Equality Australia, GO Foundation, Paralympics Australia, Special Olympics Australia, and The Social Outfit, alongside many other organizations that challenge limiting norms which prioritize one way of being over another or restrict participation based on outdated definitions of ability.
With the same passion, Studio A nurtures Thom's artistic endeavors as well as those of many extraordinary artists with intellectual disabilities. They confront assumptions and affirm that access to opportunity is the crucial pathway to participation, achievement, and success. How much more irrefutable can your work be, Thom? Your art—exhibited, reviewed, collected, and celebrated both nationally and internationally—needs no justification and asks for no permission.

You invite us to explore your world, engaging with your distinctive style and quirky motifs like extra eyes and noses! The exquisite work of a dedicated, professional, and brilliant artist, your creations inspire and elevate. Congratulations to you, Thom, the Studio A team, and the National Portrait Gallery." The Immersive World of Thom Roberts is on display at the National Portrait Gallery until July.
