The White House trade representative announced on Sunday that President Donald Trump currently has no plans to engage in discussions with Chinese President Xi Jinping regarding the ongoing tariff dispute. Jamieson Greer, the U.S.

Trade Representative, shared this information during an interview on CBS's "Face the Nation." When CBS host Margaret Brennan inquired about potential communication between the two leaders, Greer replied, "Right now, we don't have any plans for that. This issue truly lies at the leaders' level. Before April 2nd, I had a conversation with my counterpart, but since then, discussions are being handled at the leadership level. As President Trump has mentioned, we anticipate that there will be a conversation at some point." Brennan also questioned whether the White House is aiming to compel China to divest from its approximately $1.5 trillion in assets within the United States. Greer clarified that this is "not part of this plan." He went on to explain, "President Trump is pursuing a global initiative to bring American manufacturing back home and address the trade deficit. It's a worldwide issue." Greer explained that the current situation stems from China's decision to retaliate, whereas many other countries opted not to engage in retaliation and expressed a willingness to negotiate with the U.S.

"The Chinese made a different decision, so it's not a comprehensive plan from our side; they have agency in this matter," he stated. These remarks come just a day before President Xi is set to begin a five-day tour aimed at strengthening trade relationships with partners in Southeast Asia.
