Former England striker Eni Aluko has expressed her approval of the court's decision.

In the initial phase of a libel case at the High Court, it has been determined that ex-footballer Joey Barton's social media posts regarding Eni Aluko and her family were defamatory in nature.

Aluko reported that following Barton's two posts on the social media platform X in January 2024, she experienced threats of violence and harassment online, which the judge deemed defamatory.

Barton alleged that Aluko's father was involved in financial misconduct and criticized her private education, labeling her a "hypocrite." He also accused her of "playing the race card," as presented in court.

High Court judge Mr. Justice Lavender concluded that these remarks were primarily opinions but nonetheless defamatory.

Joey Barton, who was seen in a suit and sunglasses, has yet to respond to the ruling and may consider an appeal.

He also has the option to defend his statements if the case advances to trial.

Aluko, who scored 33 goals in 102 appearances for the Lionesses before retiring in 2020 to pursue a broadcasting career, welcomed the civil court's ruling, stating, "The posts were an unwarranted attack on my personal and professional identity, my integrity, and my family life—especially concerning my late father."

In a separate criminal matter, Barton, 42, has pleaded not guilty to allegedly making offensive remarks on social media about Aluko, as well as broadcasters Lucy Ward and Jeremy Vine.
