Round Up March 18, 2025
1. PM Mark Carney went to Europe, met with King Charles and Kier Starmer, the UK PM and President Macron, of France, a lovely trifecta of European leaders. Has he really only been PM for 5 days? He picked right up where Trudeau left off and set off on a whirlwind tour but as he makes his moves it's easy to see his plan for Canada unfolding. The US is not at top of his mind, Canada is, and he is working to change the country's position in the world. To emphasize the position we already have. He's reading the temperature of the land very well. We're divorcing from America and we're hanging out on Bumble, looking for dates, and making friends. And France and Australia are coming in hot!
2. Speaking of hot, did you see thirst trap Trudeau in a ball cap, and ratty jean jacket shopping for small appliances at Canadian Tire? Everyone was trying to figure out which CT he was at. Ok, it was just the women trying to figure it out. Okay, it was me. I was trying to figure it out. Shut up.
3. Macron of France was not asked for support for Canada, but Macron made a point of supporting Canadian sovereignty without any such request. The king was less obvious in his support and the over-cautious PM Starmer, who seems terrified of poking the Trumpy bear, wasn't all that forthcoming, old chap. But let's face it, we've already had the UK and, well, we're better off friends!
4. Mark Carney and Chuck already know each other, and the King has written a personal letter to him. The contents are private. Journalists are saying the "King has Canada on his mind." Which is as political as the king is allowed to be. He did wear his maple leaf medals, planted a maple tree this week as well. I suspect this will send Trump into a tantrum. He likes the idea of a "king" and thinks that kings like him. Nobody likes him except his cult. But he's quite at home in Delululand.
5. Speaking of notes, PM Trudeau left a note in his office for PM Carney that said "Mark, my friend, welcome to the best job in the world!" and it was signed simply, "Justin". He did end off his term with class. History will remember him well. I'll remember him in Canadian Tire...
6. The biggest and most interesting statement from the Carney press conference that nobody in media seemed to catch was that he isn't talking to Trump until the rhetoric around 51st state and annexation stops. I think he just doesn't ever want to talk to the old orange creeper. I don't think the old orange crank has mentioned Carney once. Odd that. Oh well, busy fixing golf tournaments in his favour probably.
7. The Hudson Bay company is closing, and I am shocked. I thought they'd already closed years ago. I once bought a white winter coat there, and that's all I remember ever buying at The Bay. I suppose being the oldest retail business in North America is special, but nostalgia can't come up with a billion dollars or two to save them. Bay bye it is!
8. Not a word out of Doug Ford. So nice. I think he was shut up in Washington. Fightin' Ford has become Frightened Ford! Let him screw up Ontario, leave Canada to the adults.
9. Mark Carney went to a St. Patrick's Day parade on the weekend. He is actually Irish and has Irish citizenship. He's giving it up because he believes that he should only have a Canadian passport as PM. I don't know, don't care but I'd find it hard to give up Irish citizenship if I had it. So good for him! 10. In a scrap with Rosie Barton from the CBC, when she asked him a question about his assets/blind trust, yet again, Carney replied, "Rosie, look inside yourself," implying that she knew she was going for a gotcha type question, not asked in good faith. I disagree, it's okay to ask the question, the problem is she editorialized by indicating that he "must have some sort of conflict" which obviously isn't true. It might be, but it's not definite and accusing him is not being tough, its making the question the news, not the answer. I expect better of the national broadcaster. 11. The journalists of CBC were quite put out by the incident. But Pierre Poilievre took the heat off Carney and his interaction with journalists when the conservative Party announced they would not have journalists on the plane during the campaign. What are they hiding? Why are they afraid of journalists. They could just say "look inside yourself," because that's a thing now! So, journalists are getting it from all sides. I don't like it. Journalists need to ask tough questions without accusation. Good candidates can take it. So, everyone is wrong here. But the Conservatives are the wrongest of all! 12. Journalists would be wise not to use any video provided by the Conservatives. Can you imagine the absolute nonsense they'll try to get reported without any reporters being able to ask the hard questions of them? On the plus side we won't have to see the beady little eyes and lying, boring face of punchable Poilievre. 13. BLOTUS is in defiance of a court order which creates a constitutional crisis. That's right, the felon is a crook. Shocker! Now he wants to impeach judges, a move that even had Republican Supreme court justice John Roberts in opposition. Suddenly the court is worried about losing their power. And suddenly there is some sign of right-mindedness. Check Hell for icicles when you get a minute. 14. SCROTUS ranted on his social media in the middle of the night that he was revoking all pardons that Joe Biden made, that they were signed by something he calls an autopen, and that Joe Biden didn't even know about the pardons that Joe Biden announced himself, with words, in public. Because he is UNHINGED 15. GLOTUS (Glandular Lump) announced he won his own golf tournament while 30 Americans died in tornadoes. So yeah, America is GREAT again. This isn't even funny. He's a psychopath. 16. All the polls now have Mark Carney looking at a majority win. This means there is a shot to save the country from the Maple Maga but only if everyone who is on Canada's side gets out and votes! The nomination flurry has started already. Be sure you're all registered to vote! Let's do this!
17. Colorado governor Jarid Polis declared March 15 "Canada Friendship Day"! Yay for Colorado for getting one day, every day is Canada friendship day for me! It's cute, but we're still not visiting or buying your swill. Jack Daniels can kiss my Aspen, Colorado! 18. Poilievre, the bored, whiney, weasel, announced that he will cut industrial carbon tax. That's right, he has brought back Axe the Tax. After struggling for weeks to come up with something new to shout, he went back to the old standby rhyme. No sense wasting good bumper stickers! It's not landing well outside the base. Industry likes stability, they base prices around the known tax rate, but also, many countries (except for the US, Saudi Arabia and Russia), have requirements for some industrial carbon reduction plan, so Poilliever will ruin trade opportunities with the abolishment of the plan. And if he has a replacement in mind, he hasn't said so. But that would require more than three words. But hey, the bumper stickers!
19. Now the biggest news! Ottawa will be investing 420 million in military presence in Nunavut and 253 million into Nunavut infrastructure. He did a press conference with their premier and military reps. Good, that coast is necessary to protect Canadian sovereignty, and it was well received. This is from funds already approved by parliament.
20. The biggest biggest news, Carney has partnered Canada with Australia on a radar system to detect threats from Russia and China! Hoppy Kangaroo! The system will cost 6 billion over 20 years and it's money that was originally budgeted to modernize NORAD (The Santa Tracker people, but they do other things) Norad agrees it's a good move ...we're moving on, and Australia is looking good in those tight jeans!
21. Canadian news is reporting that cross border travel from Canada to the US is down 500,000 vehicles in February. The lowest since Covid. This time we just don't want to go and as detentions increase and ICE gets more diabolical, I think the trend will continue. I really only ever want to go to NYC but there is a big wide world to travel, and we have our lovely friends, France, UK and Australia all excited to see us!
22. I read somewhere that everytime the US insults Canada we get 3% more French. Vive le Canada!
