Celebrating Black History Month
At CFIS, we regard the observance of Black History Month as a vital tradition and an invaluable opportunity to enhance our students' awareness of the contributions and accomplishments of Black individuals, both within Canada and globally. Throughout the month of February, our focus has been on embracing diversity, honoring historical narratives, and reflecting on the stories that shape our shared future.

A notable highlight of this year's Black History Month festivities was an impactful presentation by Mme Yewande Daniel-Ayoade on February 19. Mme Yewande, a distinguished management consultant and author of children's literature, engaged our students from Kindergarten to Grade 5 with inspiring narratives about Black individuals who have made remarkable contributions across various sectors. She addressed the resilience, strength, and achievements of the Black community, as well as the challenges they have encountered, including discrimination and obstacles to progress.
Furthermore, Mme Yewande underscored the significance of embracing diversity and valuing the unique cultural backgrounds that characterize Canadian society. She urged our students to acknowledge the importance of multiculturalism and the opportunities that Canada provides to individuals from all walks of life. Her presentation ignited meaningful discussions within our classrooms, enabling students to contemplate the ongoing contributions of Black individuals worldwide and the enduring spirit of the Black community.

Simultaneously, our youngest learners in the Early Childhood Education (ECE) program celebrated Black History Month in their own unique manner. Mme Aida, the Lead Teacher of Junior Preschool, conducted a delightful and engaging presentation for our ECE students in the Seed. This activity aimed to highlight differences, utilizing a simple and interactive approach to demonstrate the diversity of skin tones to young children. It provided an opportunity for our youngest learners to appreciate the beauty of diversity in a manner that was accessible to them. The event concluded successfully.
